Civil War by Other Means: America's Long and Unfinished Fight for Democracy by Jeremi Suri is the perfect book to help us understand our failures at creating a multi-racial democracy in the nineteenth century and how this has weakened and divided our nation. Jeremi Suri chronicles the events after the civil war, from Lincoln's assassination to Garfield's, and how they were a continuation of the war by other means.
Debating Ideas With Jan!
Estimated reading time: 1 minute, 35 secondsOne of the countless ways I miss Jan is in the friendly debate of ideas. We never disagreed on anything of significance. However, debating ideas allowed us to understand better the issues that impacted our family, community, and efforts to repair the world.
Over time, I have found a way to minimize the loss by either debating with myself (in that scenario, I always win) or holding my tongue until I find someone to discuss the topic. Waiting invariably means the debate never occurs.
I recently read Civil War by Other Means: America’s Long and Unfinished Fight for Democracy by Jeremi Suri and wanted to share my thoughts with Jan.
I highly recommend the book as it helped me understand our failures to create a multi-racial democracy in the nineteenth century and how this has weakened and divided our nation.
Adding to the enigma of being unable to debate with Jan, I attended a documentary screening of Lowndes County and the Road to Black Power with a friend. We discussed the film, but it was different from Jan‘s.
The movie could have a companion piece to the book by Jeremi Suri, which illustrates the continued failure to create a multi-racial democracy.
Jan and I engaged in ideas through critical discussions and debates.
The book and movie combination frustrated me because I could not debate them with Jan.
However, both allowed me to understand modern times more clearly.
