I remember reading portions of Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl at different times, but I never finished the book. However, recently, eight and a half months after the passing of Jan, the book came up for discussion in one of my groups. Frankl's theory of logotherapy, which derives from the Greek word for "meaning," centers around the idea that the primary human drive is not pleasure, as Freud believed, but rather the search for what gives life meaning. I now have a framework for my life without Jan.
Discomfort is the Price of Admission
Estimated reading time: 0 minutes, 48 secondsMy life’s journey has been full of discomfort, especially last year.
Every day I am reminded that discomfort is the price of admission to a meaningful life.
Jan and I often asked why life’s unbearable burdens often seemed to hinder our progress.
Neither of us was ever able to answer that question.
Now I feel the discomfort of not having Jan physically with me every day.
But the truth is that these discomforts are the price we pay for a meaningful life.
My daily discomforts were the admission price for having Jan’s spirit and soul with me now.
