March is the Tenth Month of Record Heat
Estimated reading time: 0 minutes, 35 secondsIn March 2024, Earth broke the record for global heat for the 10th month in a row. According to Copernicus, the European Union climate agency, the air temperatures and oceans worldwide reached an all-time high. The average temperature for March 2024 was 14.14 degrees Celsius (57.9 degrees Fahrenheit), a tenth of a degree higher than the previous record from 2016. This temperature was 1.68 degrees Celsius (3 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than the late 1800s, which was used as a base for temperatures before the increase in fossil fuel burning.
Since June of the previous year, the world has consistently set new monthly heat records. Marine heat waves across large areas of the oceans have contributed to this trend.
